Starter kit for biobanks under construction
What areas of work are there in a biobank? What fundamental aspects need to be considered? What does a biobank laboratory need? And how is a storage facility set up? These and many other questions are answered by a "starter kit" developed by the working group of the same name under the leadership of Dr Heidi Altmann(Dresden Integrated Liquid Biobank) and Dr Daniel Brucker(Interdisciplinary Biomaterial and Database Frankfurt, iBDF). It is aimed in particular at "young" biobanks that are still being set up and those that are at the very beginning of planning a new biobank. Readers benefit from the concentrated knowledge that has been jointly developed.
The Starterkit is a structured, modular guide available on the OpenILIAS online platform. It provides an overview of the key aspects of biobanking as well as checklists and links to further information or templates. The modules are accompanied by numerous webinars.
The starter kit contains information on the following topics:
- Organisation and governance
- Financing
- Personnel
- ELSI
- Laboratory
- Warehouse
- IT
- Quality Management
- Study and project management
- Further education and training
- Communication and public relations
Developments in biobanking in recent years have shown that the recommendations given here can by no means be regarded as permanently valid. The Starterkit is therefore intended to represent a "living" knowledge base that is continuously updated and supplemented.
