The interdisciplinary Biomaterial and Database Frankfurt (iBDF) organises the quality-assured and data protection-compliant collection and storage of various biological materials and makes them available for positively assessed research projects in accordance with a procedure accepted by the ethics committee and data protection authorities. The focus is on the collection of biosamples from patients with tumour, cardiovascular or psychiatric diseases, as well as polytrauma patients.

The samples collected are residual materials from tissues, blood, bone marrow and other body fluids taken during treatment/surgery for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes. For logistical reasons, these are stored at various locations of the University Hospital Frankfurt, including the Pathology, Neuropathology, Haematology, Virology, Microbiology, Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Trauma Centre and Cardiology departments.

The management of materials and annotation with clinical information is centralised by iBDF's project management team using a powerful IT solution (CentraXX). This allows information from the clinical documentation and biosample collections to be brought together.
