Since 2005, the Molecular Oncology and Immunotherapy (MOI) working group has been systematically collecting samples in the cell, tissue and tumour bank, primarily in connection with oncological operations in the department. In addition to tumour tissue, unchanged normal tissue, serum and blood cells from patients are also preserved. The collection currently comprises almost 1,000 cases and its unique selling point is the focus on long-term storage of the preserved samples at -150°C as well as the systematic generation of tumour models.

The biobank is part of the North German Tumour Bank, a cooperation project between various North German clinics with the long-term goal of "individualised tumour therapy". It is also a member of larger national and international biobank organisations (ESBB - European, Middle Eastern & African Society for Biopreservation and Biobanking).
