The IBBJ is the integrated central biobank for the Medical Faculty of the University Hospital Jena. It is a central resource for the collection of biosamples from defined clinical research projects and research networks as well as for the recruitment of clinical samples and is operated in close co-operation with a large number of operative and non-operative disciplines.
TheIBBJ sees itself as a cooperation partner and service provider in the context of clinical research projects and, together with the respective study directors, takes on the planning and organisation of the entire biobanking process: from sample collection, to their approval by the relevant ethics committees, sample collection, storage, release and the associated sample dispatch. A fully automated -80°C sample storage facility with the option of automatically compiling sample sets at -60°C and conventional cryostorage capacities for storage at very low temperatures (-150°C) allow the handling and storage of approx. 2.5 million samples under strictly controlled conditions.
Secure access to the sample collection and the associated data is ensured locally and for external applicants via a standardised application procedure and always involves scientific and operational decision-making bodies. In this way, the IBBJ guarantees the highest quality standards in the handling of samples in strict compliance with the applicable ethical, legal and data protection framework conditions.
The IBBJ emerged from the merger of the three biobanks set up as part of the Jena Sepsis Cluster(SEPNET, SEPTOMICS, CSCC), which is why support for sepsis research is still a priority today.
