The BioBank Bonn is a service facility of the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn and the University Hospital Bonn. The task of the biobank is to enable and support clinical-translational research as well as basic research, for example for the development of diagnostic, prognostic and predictive biomarkers for certain diseases, at the University Hospital Bonn. This includes the collection, storage, provision and, if necessary, processing of biosamples and their derivatives.
The data and metadata associated with the biosamples are collected and stored in a database. In the case of biosamples taken from patients or test subjects, personal data may also be collected and stored. BioBank Bonn provides researchers with broad consent for this purpose.
The database structure and the IT processes of the biobank are set up and implemented in strict compliance with data protection and the personal rights of patients and test subjects, and the data are subject to constant quality control with regard to completeness and accuracy.
The uniform processing of biosamples in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) ensures consistently high quality as a prerequisite for meaningful biological analyses. The transfer of corresponding samples and the associated data only takes place after a positive evaluation of the research project by an ethics committee and the gatekeeper of BioBank Bonn.
BioBank Bonn generally supports research projects from a wide range of areas and already has large collections, particularly in the fields of oncology and cardiovascular diseases.
