Your routine documentation can strengthen research in emergency medicine!

Become part of the AKTIN community. Contribute to important research projects with your data.

Getting started - Why AKTIN?

Standardised and interoperable data from Emergency Departments open up opportunities for multi-centre care research and public health surveillance in emergency medicine.

Data from intensive care will be made available through our associated project NUM RAPID.

Whilst clinical experience is valuable, only systematic access to aggregated patient data is possible:

  • Sound presentation of the utilisation situation - at local, regional and national level
  • Evidence-based comparative studies - to identify and transfer successful models
  • Daily surveillance - to identify epidemiological trends at an early stage and coordinate measures
  • Dissemination of best practices - on a scientific basis and therefore convincing for the entire network

Your data can help to utilise this potential. AKTIN enables the cross-IT system and cross-institutional use of routine data from emergency and, in the future, intensive care without additional documentation effort, with automated and daily updated output.

With AKTIN you get:

✓ The opportunity to participate in multi-centre medical research, e.g. on

  • Pandemic surveillance: How do Emergency Departments react to health crises? Can new developments be detected at an early stage?
  • Healthcare research: What measures improve healthcare?
  • Epidemiology: Which diseases are becoming more common? Are there regional differences?
  • Quality research: How do optimal treatment pathways work?

✓ Control over which researchers use your data for which questions. AKTIN works with federated authorisation, which means:

  • See every enquiry: You receive every research request for review.
  • Actively approve: You decide consciously and individually whether you want to participate.
  • Reject without reason: You can reject at any time - no justification necessary.
  • Transparent: You can see the research question, the researcher, the purpose, the variables queried and the planned analyses.

✓ Transparent insight into research projects

✓ Access to research results and findings from the NUM network

Requirements & prerequisites

What is required for participation?

  • Digital documentation of patient care in the Emergency Departments.
  • Documentation according to the DIVI Emergency Departments data set.
  • IT expertise in configuring the AKTIN software and firewalls.
  • Ideally 2 contact persons per clinic: representatives of the Emergency Departments and IT.
  • Electronic documentation system
  • Interface (HL7-CDA version 2026.2) to the AKTIN data warehouse
  • (Virtual) server for the local AKTIN data warehouse (~100 GB)
  • Stable internet connection (no special requirements)
  • Firewall configuration for secure external communication

Many EDIS available in Germany from well-known IT manufacturers already offer the interface.

  • Implementation: 2-6 months (depending on the complexity of the local system)
  • Approvals: Data protection check and ethics vote (~1-2 months)
  • Ongoing: ~4 hours/month for support & maintenance

The good news: You are not alone! The AKTIN team will support you every step of the way.
