The NUM study network is currently in an important phase of further development. In order to further strengthen nationwide collaboration in the medical research landscape, a concept for "in-kind participation" is currently being developed. The concept will give interested sites the opportunity to actively participate from 2026 and get involved in the network's processes at an early stage - regardless of whether they already belong to the existing specialist network for infections. From April 2027, all 37 German academic medical centres will then be regularly represented in the NUM study network.
The centrepiece of the new model is the introduction of a three-tier membership system that takes into account the different needs and stages of development of the sites:
Level 1 - Guest Membership: this low-threshold form of participation enables locations to gain an initial insight into the workings of the NUM Study Network without any formal requirements.
Level 2 - Associate membership: At this level, the locations already accept extended tasks from the requirements portfolio of the core locations, with the exception of setting up the technical platforms, and can become more involved in work processes.
Level 3 - Core location: As fully integrated members, these locations fulfil the complete portfolio of requirements. This includes the acceptance of model contract clauses, the establishment of a local contact point, clear internal communication structures, compliance with defined circulation times for documents and messages, and the development of technical platforms.
With each membership level, not only do the obligations increase, but also the rights of the participating locations, for example with regard to participation in decision-making or funding authorisation. This creates a flexible, growing system that makes it easier to join and at the same time further strengthens the quality standards of the NUM study network.
