The aim of the study "Use of integrated genomic surveillance by local public health authorities: Recommendations based on a mixed-methods study of current adoption, applications and success factors, Germany, 2023" (EuroSurveillance) was to record the knowledge, needs and expectations of German public health authorities with regard to genomic pathogen surveillance and to derive recommendations based on this. The study shows that many local health authorities do not yet have the necessary knowledge, personnel or technical resources or the structural requirements to effectively implement genomic pathogen surveillance. The recommendations and best-practice approaches developed offer guidance on how genomic pathogen surveillance can be systematically established and utilised in local health authorities. This is not only relevant in the context of future pandemics, but also contributes to the general improvement of infection prevention and control in the public health service.
