Key points at a glance

The COVIM platform lays the foundations for precise, standardised and scalable immunological analyses in Germany. The aim is to support large multicentre studies, as well as the development and clinical trialling of innovative immunotherapeutic strategies, through high-quality immunological measurement methods. In doing so, COVIM makes an important contribution to clinical research and promotes the development of pioneering diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

The NUM Platform for Immunity Research (COVIM) comprises five work packages. Administrative project coordination is handled by the central Project Management Office (PMO), which ensures the flow of information and synergy between the individual COVIM work packages, as well as coordination with other NUM-FIS and external partners (WP1). Requests to use the measurement platform are formally reviewed by the PMO and forwarded to the Scientific and Technical Coordination team (WP2) for further substantive processing. This unit undertakes advisory and coordination tasks in liaison with COVIM partners and external stakeholders, such as users of the measurement platform (academia, public health or industry). Together with WP1, it also coordinates the expansion process from 11 to 25 laboratories from 2027 onwards.

Highlights

Through the COVIM consortium, significant progress was made over the course of the project in understanding SARS-CoV-2 immunity following infection and vaccination. This was reflected in over 100 scientific publications, which attracted considerable attention worldwide and, in some cases, were incorporated into national recommendations and guidelines.

COVIM provided the first findings on the immunogenicity and safety of heterologous vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 and contributed key insights into the effectiveness of a third dose of the vaccine against the emerging Omicron variant.

Through their assessment of the project findings on immunity and COVID-19 vaccinations, the consortium members helped to inform the public and were consulted by policy-makers at state and federal level.
