Starting signal for ten years of research into post-infectious diseases

On 30 January, Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär proclaimed the National Decade against Post-Infectious Diseases. Over the next ten years, the causes and mechanisms of diseases such as Long COVID or ME/CFS are to be better understood and new therapeutic approaches developed.

Ralf Heyder, Head of the Network of University Medicine (NUM) Coordination Office, was also present at the press conference. He categorised the role of the NUM as follows:

"The Network of University Medicine was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and has been dealing with the long-term consequences of this disease ever since. The NUM has established nationwide platforms to promptly test the efficacy and safety of potential drugs for the treatment of long-term consequences after infections in clinical trials. The NUM contributes its powerful Reseach Infrastructure for clinical research to the Decade against Post-Infectious Diseases and makes it available to all stakeholders involved."

With its Reseach Infrastructure, the NUM supports the collaboration of all stakeholders involved - across all 37 German academic medical centres.
