With the multi-part series "NUM-MB Short Tutorials Patient-Reported Outcomes", the NUM Methods- & and Biosample-Hub (NUM-MB) offers a compact introduction to the world of "patient-reported outcomes" (PROs). In PROs, patients report and evaluate their state of health - e.g. symptoms or general quality of life.
In the first episode, Prof Dr Matthias Rose from Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin gives an overview of the development and growing importance of PROs in research and healthcare. From the first standardised questionnaires of the 1980s, such as the SF-36, to international initiatives such as PROMIS and ICHOM, the most important milestones are traced. The episode also looks at current developments such as real-world evidence, digital recording using computer-adaptive tests (CAT) and the integration of PROs into everyday clinical practice. A particular focus is placed on the harmonisation and comparability of outcomes - key prerequisites for modern, patient-centred healthcare. The tutorial series is aimed at scientists, clinic managers and anyone interested in gaining a sound understanding of patient-reported outcomes and using them in a targeted manner.
