Every year, over two million people in Germany receive intensive care – many of them suffering from acute failure of vital organs. All too often, modern medicine in this context is based on experience rather than sound evidence. To change this, the CritCare Study Network (SN) brings together the expertise of over 600 researchers at all German university hospitals – conducting clinical trials for critically ill patients of all ages, from birth right through to old age. Five organ modules – brain, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys – as well as the cross-cutting modules of paediatrics and digital medicine form the scientific core of the network. Together, the network pursues the goal of translating research findings directly into better care.
