On 13 June 2025, the second NATON quarterly meeting of the year took place in a hybrid format as part of the annual conference of the German Society of Pathology (DGP) in Leipzig.
To kick things off, Dr Pia Hönscheid from Dresden University Hospital gave an exciting presentation on the use of mass spectrometry to detect previously unknown viruses and diseases and the extent to which this technology has already been integrated into NATON.
After a lively discussion, news from the network was presented: In the first half of 2025, 300autopsy data sets were entered in the autopsy register - a pleasing result that underlines the successful development of the network. It was also announced that nothing stands in the way of NAREG going live from a legal perspective and that the next steps are now being initiated. There is also already an initial draft for a NATON module in Broad Consent.
Another topic of the meeting was the importance of integrating the patient's perspective into the network and its practical implementation, as well as the potential impact of the European Health Data Space (EHDS). The successful completion of the NUM 3.0 application process in the infrastructure line and the current status of the eLEVATE research project were also reported on.
The event concluded with an inspiring presentation by Prof Dr Peter Boor on the newly planned COLOCATE project, which is to be developed as part of the network. The aim is to advance (digital) pathology research.
