The observational cohort of the NUM Study Network Critical Care (SN CritCare) was piloted at the Würzburg site. In addition to the first adult intensive care patient, the first two children and adolescents were also included. This marked the first time that paediatric patients had been included in an observational cohort of a NUM study network. An observational cohort is a group of patients who are observed and systematically documented over a specific period of time. The aim is to gain a better understanding of how acute organ dysfunction develops and progresses, and what factors influence recovery. The next step will be to expand recruitment to the sites involved in the first phase of the specialist network.
The Study Network Critical Care aims to improve research into and the care of critically ill patients with acute organ dysfunction. Acute organ dysfunction occurs when vital organs such as the brain, lungs, heart, liver or kidneys are impaired. To this end, SN CritCare is establishing a nationwide network of university research centres and bringing together more than 500 experts from German academic medical centres. The network includes patients of all age groups – from premature and newborn babies right through to the elderly. It aims to help coordinate research into critical care issues across different sites and to generate reliable findings for the care of critically ill patients.
