The Network of University Medicine (NUM) and the Japan Institute for Health Security (JIHS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand their cooperation in infection research. The aim is to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Germany and Japan in clinical and epidemiological research, in the development of Research Infrastructures and in crisis preparedness.
Plans include joint multi-centre studies, the exchange of methods, data and best practices as well as programmes for personnel and knowledge transfer. Conferences and delegation visits are also intended to promote cooperation. The agreement is initially valid for three years.
The MoU was signed during the first JIHS-NUM Symposium on 15 April 2026 in Berlin. There, experts from both countries exchanged views on key topics such as viral haemorrhagic fevers, antibiotic resistance and respiratory infections.
Both partners bring complementary strengths to the table: The NUM has a Germany-wide network of clinical research infrastructures, while the JIHS combines research, surveillance and clinical expertise in the field of infectious diseases in Japan. Together, they aim to strengthen research capacities and improve preparedness for future health threats.
