Three representatives of the National Autopsy Network (NATON) took part in a joint delegation trip to Nigeria organised by the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) and the Academic Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). The aim of the trip was to exchange expertise with local colleagues on the use of ultrasound-guided, minimally invasive procedures for post-mortem tissue removal in the context of highly infectious diseases such as Lassa fever. NATON coordinator Prof Dr Benjamin Ondruschka, project manager Dr Kristina Allgoewer and neuropathologist PD Dr Susanne Krasemann travelled to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital together with the BNITM team. The minimally invasive method is a valuable tool for post-mortem diagnostics, particularly in resource-limited regions and in infectious high-risk situations.
