BioMaterialBank Heidelberg (BMBH) was founded in 2011 as an organisational merger of the quality-assured biobanks in Heidelberg. The nine harmonised sub-biobanks of the BMBH collect, process and store high-quality tissue samples and liquid biomaterials from clinical routine and studies. In total, they manage more than 200,000 tissue samples and 2.8 million liquid samples in organ-specific collections (lung, heart, vessels, pancreas, skin) as well as in specialised collections on tumour diseases, infections and diabetes.
The BMBH has a centralised biosample management system, a joint technology platform and a structured quality management system. The NCT Tissue Bank, as the largest sub-biobank of BMBH, has been accredited according to the biobank standard DIN EN ISO 20387 together with its branch offices of the Heidelberg Lung Biobank and the DZIF Tissue Bank since 2023. With its expertise in quality management, BMBH contributes to the establishment of overarching quality standards as part of the German Biobank Alliance (GBA).
