FREEZE-Biobank Freiburg

The FREEZE Biobank is a service facility at the University Hospital Freiburg and the Medical Faculty of the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg and is responsible for professionalising the collection, storage and release of biosamples at the site. Biobanking processes are standardised and optimised across clinics and centres to enable high-quality sample collections. The expertise of partner biobanks, such as the tumour tissue biobank of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg and the Hilda Biobank for Children and Adolescents at the Centre for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine, is integrated into the overall concept.

Close cooperation with the MIRACUM initiative at the site and the hospital computer centre enables the biosamples to be linked with clinical annotations, among other things. A special feature of the FREEZE biobank is the decentralised processing and storage of samples in dedicated hubs, which are operated in a harmonised and quality-controlled manner. A connection to the centrally operated biobank information management system CentraXX is in progress and has already been implemented for the first partners (Centre for Chronic Immunodeficiency Biobank, Clinic for Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology - IR Biobank).

The FREEZE biobank focuses on the main research areas of the Faculty of Medicine, including oncology, immunology and infections, regenerative medicine and neurosciences.

As part of the German Biobank Alliance (GBA), the FREEZE Biobank would like to set special accents in the areas of i) blood cell-based biobanking, ii) biobanking for tissue replacement and iii) data integration through close partnership with the Medical Informatics Initiative (MIRACUM).
