In April 2026, a delegation from Slovakia (BBMRI.sk) and participants from the Czech Republic visited the GBN sites in Dresden and Heidelberg. The aim was to engage in professional exchange on the structures, processes and prospects of modern biobanks, as well as to foster networking at European level. The delegation comprised representatives from seven academic institutions – including university hospitals, medical faculties and the National Cancer Institute of Slovakia – as well as partners from industry. Slovakia has been a full member of the European biobank network BBMRI-ERIC since last year.
Practical insights in Dresden
At BioBank Dresden (BBD), the focus was on key aspects of biobank operations, including the range of samples, IT and database solutions, ethical frameworks, as well as quality assurance and funding. Particular emphasis was placed on the automation of laboratory and storage processes, for example through pipetting robotics and automated cryostorage systems. Dr Heidi Altmann, BBD spokesperson and member of the GBN Steering Committee, summed up: “The visit highlighted how important standardised processes and automation are for efficient and sustainable biobank operations.”
Automation and quality in Heidelberg
During the visit to the Heidelberg Cell and Liquid Biobank (CLB), which is part of the BioMaterialBank Heidelberg (BMBH), the participants discussed in particular automated sample storage, quality management and the provision of biosamples for translational research. Dr Nadine Volk, Head of the Biobank, emphasised: “Such meetings offer a valuable opportunity to exchange best practices and further develop common standards in European biobanking.”
